What is the history of Bogor?
Bogor was the seat of an old Sundanese kingdom. The Hindu kings of Pajajaran ruled the western hills from here in the middle ages, leaving carved stones and the memory of a great capital in the rain forest. Kings ruled the hills.
The old inscription of the Pajajaran rulers still stands in the city, a stone from the days before the Muslims and the Dutch came. The Dutch made it their hill retreat. Governors of the East Indies came up from the heat of Batavia to a cool palace in the hills, and around it they laid out one of the great botanical gardens of the tropics, gathering plants from across the islands.
The gardens grew world famous. Scientists filled the great garden with orchids, giant lilies, and towering trees, and the palace became the country's own after independence, its lawns grazed by tame deer. The rain still falls on the gardens.
