Where to stay in Givatayim

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Givatayim is compact enough to make the choice a metropolitan one. The whole municipality runs to roughly three square kilometres, so the practical question is which neighbour's beds to take and which landmark that choice puts within reach. Ramat Gan is the closest answer. The Ramat Gan Safari, the Ramat Gan Museum of Israeli Art and the Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum all carry the adjoining municipality's name, and a room on that side leaves Givatayim's own streets a walk away rather than a journey.

Three ancient mounds share the list. Tel Bnei Brak, Tell Qasile and Tel Gerisa are archaeological ground rather than anywhere to sleep, and they sit far enough apart across Gush Dan that no single base reaches all three on foot. Tel Aviv is the other pull.

The Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Tel Aviv Cinematheque sit on the far side of the city line, and a stay chosen for either belongs to the larger city rather than to this one. Distance is small; the difference is one of streets, not of hours. The Eretz Israel Museum and the Yitzhak Rabin Center point further out across the metropolitan area again, and planning a stay around them gives up the compactness that makes Givatayim itself quick to cross.

No part of it lies far off.

About Givatayim

Density is the defining fact.

What is Givatayim known for?

Givatayim is one of the tightest municipalities in the Gush Dan metropolitan area, pressed up against Tel Aviv from the east with almost nothing left undeveloped inside its boundary. Spiral House sits close by. The wider landmark list reaches the Ramat Gan Museum of Israeli Art, the Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum and the Ramat Gan Safari, all of them inside the same Gush Dan metropolitan area rather than the city itself.

What are the main landmarks in Givatayim?

The list is metropolitan, not municipal. Museums dominate it: the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the Eretz Israel Museum, the Ramat Gan Museum of Israeli Art, the Bauhaus Museum and the Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum all fall inside the same conurbation as Givatayim. Houses account for the rest.

Engel House, Berlin House, Levin House, the Pagoda House and Spiral House are addresses rather than collections, and the Jabotinsky Institute in Israel, the Joseph Bau House and the Bialik House add archives and displays to the count.

What is the history of Givatayim?

The ground was settled long before 1922. Tell Qasile, Tel Gerisa and Tel Bnei Brak are mounds left by far older occupation, and all three stand within the same metropolitan area that Givatayim belongs to. Givatayim itself is a modern creation.

Pioneers of the Second Aliyah established it in 1922, and the municipality that grew from that settlement forms one piece of the Gush Dan metropolitan area east of Tel Aviv. Memory has its own buildings here. The Jabotinsky Institute in Israel, the Bialik House and the Yitzhak Rabin Center each carry the name of a separate figure from the country's twentieth century, and the Joseph Bau House and the Hetzel Museum extend the same commemorative line.

Architecture records the rest. Engel House, Berlin House, Levin House and the Pagoda House are named buildings rather than institutions, while Spiral House and the Bauhaus Museum turn the same architectural interest into something to visit. Lodzia House sits on the same list.

Ramat Gan carries the recreational side, with the Ramat Gan Safari and the Memadion beside it, and the Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum standing for the trade its name announces. Both layers stay visible.

Where is Givatayim?

Everything about Givatayim is small-scale. Givatayim covers just over three square kilometres, which leaves it among the most compact municipalities in the Gush Dan metropolitan area and puts its boundary within a short walk from almost anywhere inside it. Tel Aviv lies immediately west.

Ramat Gan holds the landmarks on the other side, from the Ramat Gan Safari to the Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum, and the built ground crosses between the two municipalities without a visible seam.

What is the climate of Givatayim?

The subtropical band governs it. Givatayim shares its weather with the whole of Gush Dan, where the hot half of the year runs long and dry and the cooler months carry what rain the metropolitan area gets. Density adds its own heat.

A few square kilometres of near-continuous building hold warmth after dark, so shade and an early start matter more in the streets of Givatayim than they would in a looser suburb of Gush Dan.

How do you get to Givatayim?

Arrival means arriving in Tel Aviv. Givatayim has no separate approach of its own: the city sits directly east of Tel Aviv with Ramat Gan alongside it, and any route into the Gush Dan metropolitan area lands a traveller within a few kilometres of it. Distances inside the conurbation are short.

The Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the Ramat Gan Safari and the Eretz Israel Museum all sit inside the same built-up area, so moving between them is a matter of crossing municipal lines rather than covering real distance.
