What is Herzliya known for?

Herzliya runs along the Mediterranean north of Tel Aviv, covering some twenty-one square kilometres of the Tel Aviv District, and the shoreline is what separates it from the inland towns around it. Business is the other half. The city carries a startup and entrepreneurial culture that has little to do with the Mediterranean, and the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art and the Herzliya Cinematheque give the city somewhere to go once the working day ends.

What is the history of Herzliya?

Herzliya was founded in 1924. The settlement took shape on the Mediterranean coast north of Tel Aviv, on ground that חירבת אל-עורה shows had been used long before any twentieth-century planning arrived. The coast set the western limit from the start.

Individual buildings carry their own names. Davor house, בית רוזנפלד and The Orange House appear on the city's landmark list as individual buildings, each one a piece of built record that the museums do not hold. Work changed the city's character.

What is the climate of Herzliya?

Mediterranean water keeps the swings small. Herzliya sits on the water in the subtropical band, so summer heat arrives with the humidity that an open coast carries and the sea keeps the extremes narrower here than a few kilometres inland. Rain belongs to the cooler months.

A beach afternoon at the western edge and an indoor one at the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art divide the year between them, and the Herzliya Cinematheque handles what the weather sends in between.

How do you get to Herzliya?

Tel Aviv is the approach. Herzliya lies directly north of it on the Mediterranean coast, so arriving means continuing up the coast from the larger city rather than making a separate journey to a separate destination. The Tel Aviv District is continuous here.

Ramat Hasharon and its Geological Garden lie inland on the same run, and Sportek Herzliya, the Herzliya Cinematheque and the Civilization Museum in Herzliya are all within the city once a traveller reaches it.
