The North Zone is Ahmedabad's upriver belt of Sabarmati, Chandkheda and Motera, home to the Narendra Modi Stadium.

About Ahmedabad/North Zone

Where to stay in Ahmedabad/North Zone

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

Match crowds sleep here. Rooms cluster near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Complex at Motera, where hotels fill on cricket days within a short ride of the Narendra Modi Stadium and the riverside road north out of Ahmedabad. Quieter beds sit inland at Chandkheda and Sabarmati, close to the northern edge of the Sabarmati Riverfront and the road toward Gandhinagar. Naranpura keeps older, cheaper rooms nearer the city.

Stay here for the ground, not the old streets.

About Ahmedabad/North Zone

What are the main landmarks in Ahmedabad/North Zone?

The Narendra Modi Stadium defines this zone. Rebuilt on the ground of the old Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium inside the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Complex at Motera, it holds the largest cricket crowd of any ground in the world and staged the 2023 Cricket World Cup final. The Sabarmati Riverfront runs its promenade north along the water toward Motera and Chandkheda, tying the barrage and gardens to the residential streets of Sabarmati.

Ranip and Naranpura fill the inland grid with temples, markets and older housing.

What is the history of Ahmedabad/North Zone?

The river drew the city north. For most of Ahmedabad's past these upriver villages of Sabarmati, Motera and Chandkheda stayed farmland well beyond the walled town, tied to it only by the road to Gandhinagar. Cricket changed the balance when the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium rose at Motera in the nineteen-eighties, and the ground was rebuilt as the far larger Narendra Modi Stadium a generation later.

Suburbs such as Ranip and Naranpura filled the gaps as the corporation drew the zone to hold that northward spread.

Where is Ahmedabad/North Zone?

The North Zone runs upriver along the Sabarmati River above Ahmedabad's old city, gathering Sabarmati, Motera and Chandkheda on the eastern bank with Ranip and Naranpura inland, and reaching north toward Gandhinagar.
