Ahmedabad/West Zone, Ahmedabad — Area Guide & Where to Stay

The West Zone is the leafy half of Ahmedabad west of the Sabarmati River, holding Navrangpura, Paldi and the Sabarmati Ashram.

About Ahmedabad/West Zone

Where to stay in Ahmedabad/West Zone

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

The West Zone is where most visitors to Ahmedabad choose to sleep. Beds gather along C G Road. This commercial spine through Navrangpura keeps mid-range and business hotels within a short ride of Gujarat University, the Sabarmati Riverfront and the restaurants that fill Ellisbridge each evening.

Further south, quieter rooms sit near Paldi and the National Institute of Design, close to the museums but away from the traffic of Ashram Road. Stay here for calm streets and quick reach across the river.

About Ahmedabad/West Zone

What are the main landmarks in Ahmedabad/West Zone?

The Sabarmati Ashram anchors the zone's memory. Gandhi lived at this riverside compound from 1917, and the Dandi March set out from its gate. Along the water, the Sabarmati Riverfront gives Ahmedabad a long promenade of steps and gardens, while Le Corbusier's Sanskar Kendra and the cave-like Amdavad ni Gufa hold art a short way inland.

Green breaks open at Law Garden and Parimal Garden, and Vastrapur Lake draws walkers to the western edge of the district.

What is the history of Ahmedabad/West Zone?

The river shaped this side. For centuries Ahmedabad grew as a walled city on the eastern bank, and the land west of the Sabarmati stayed largely open until bridges tied the two shores together. Gandhi's move to the Sabarmati Ashram in 1917 pulled attention across the water, and the university and design institutes that followed turned Navrangpura and Paldi into the city's schooled, planned quarter.

Growth came steadily, not overnight.

Where is Ahmedabad/West Zone?

The West Zone fills the ground west of the Sabarmati River, spreading from the Ellisbridge and Navrangpura core out past Vastrapur Lake toward the ring road, with Ahmedabad's old city facing it across the water.
