What is the history of Ganesh Peth?
Sakharam Bapu Bokil laid out Ganesh Peth in 1755 and named it for the god Ganesh. Bokil ranked high in Peshwa Pune. He was born in 1700, served the Maratha Empire as minister and diplomat, acted as regent to Madhavrao II, and died at Raigad in 1781.
Maratha tradition counted him among the three and a half wise men of his age. It came between Guruwar Peth of 1750 and Narayan Peth of 1761.
