Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Narayan Peth holds few hotels between Laxmi Road and Kelkar Road, so most stays sit in Deccan Gymkhana or along Bajirao Road, minutes from Kesari Wada. The peth rewards walkers. Laxmi Road edges it with saree and jewellery shops packed shoulder to shoulder, while the lanes behind stay narrow, low-built and crowded with handcarts well past dusk.
Patrya Maruti Chowk makes a useful pivot. Pick it if you want the old Pune core on foot and can sleep through horns.

What are the main landmarks in Narayan Peth?
Kesari Wada stands at 568 Narayan Peth on Kelkar Road, the mansion Bal Gangadhar Tilak bought in 1905 and turned into the office of his newspaper Kesari. Modi Ganpati Mandir sits nearby. Its sanctum was raised early in the nineteenth century over an idol said to have surfaced in a Modi family garden, and the assembly hall followed in 1868.
Patrya Maruti Mandir takes its name from the sheet-metal roof over it. Murlidhar Mandir and the Shinde Paar Maruti shrine round out the graded heritage list, most of them set back in lanes too narrow for a car.
What is the history of Narayan Peth?
Narayan Peth was laid out under the Peshwas and carries the name of Narayanrao Peshwa, the tenth Peshwa, who was killed at Shaniwar Wada in 1773. The name outlived the man. Sayajirao Gaekwad III of Baroda sold the peth's largest wada to Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1905, after which it took the name Kesari Wada and housed his Kesari and Maratha newspapers.
Tilak worked there until 1920. From that courtyard he pushed the public Ganesh festival outward across Maharashtra, and the wada holds the Kesari-Maratha Trust office along with his desk and papers.

Narayan Peth lies in central Pune with Shaniwar Peth to the north, Budhwar Peth to the east and Sadashiv Peth to the south, framed by Laxmi Road and Bajirao Road.
