Mangalwar Peth keeps no hotel quarter of its own, so most visitors book east of the two streams and walk in. Beds gather around Pune Railway Station, a little over a kilometre out. Kasba Peth lies straight across the Nagzari to the west, Somwar Peth to the south, and both fall inside the same walk from these lanes. Barne Road crosses the Manik.

Mangalwar Peth dates from 1663, one of seven peths in Pune that carry the name of a weekday. The ground carried the name Astapura before the peth was cut. Mangalwar is Tuesday in Marathi.
In 1662 the Mughal subahdar Shaista Khan had camped on this stretch while campaigning against Shivaji, and the quarter grew on what he left behind. Three centuries on, the Panshet dam burst on 12 July 1961, and the flood that followed did severe damage here and across the rest of the old city.
