About Somwar Peth

Where to stay in Somwar Peth
The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
Somwar Peth is old-city Pune, a quarter of temple lanes, schools and shopfronts. Station Road runs north-east across it to Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, the through road that passes Chhatrapati Shahu Udyan and the gate of KEM Hospital in Rasta Peth. Pune Junction lies a kilometre north-east.
Rooms in and around the peth put Kasba Peth and Nana Peth within a walk, with Pune Camp beyond the tracks. Art Deco fronts stand among the temples, on the Deshpande Bungalow and the S.V. Union High School.
Take this address if Nageshwar Temple and Trishund Ganpati Mandir belong in your first morning rather than a day trip.
About Somwar Peth
What are the main landmarks in Somwar Peth?
Somwar Peth holds eight structures on the Pune Municipal Corporation heritage list, all of them temples or maths. Trishund Ganpati Mandir, an 18th-century stone temple on the bank of the Nagzari, was raised by the nomadic Gosavi community; a rhinoceros and a file of British officers are cut into its lower right corner. Nageshwar Temple stands at 260, Somwar Peth.
Its shrine is roofed in stone in the Hemadpanthi manner under an onion-shaped shikhara, and Kala Ram Mandir Complex adjoins it at number 59. Prasannyeshwar Temple and Narpatgir Vishnu Mandir both face Chhatrapati Shahu Udyan, the garden at 414 on Gadge Maharaj Road.
What is the history of Somwar Peth?
Somwar Peth was one of six peths already standing when Bajirao I made Pune his headquarters, with Kasba, Shaniwar, Raviwar, Mangalwar and Budhwar. Its older name was Shahapur. Each weekday peth traded on the day it was named for, and Somwar is Marathi for Monday.
Murar Jagdeo of the Adil Shahi razed the town, after which Dadoji Kondadeo rebuilt it for Shahaji and drew back the families who had gone. Gosavi ascetics settled this ground and left their names on it, in the Dashnam Gosavi Samstha Math and Temple at 432 and the Gosavipura Chatri near 15 August Chowk.
Where is Somwar Peth?
Somwar Peth lies between Mangalwar Peth to the north and Rasta Peth to the south, the Nagzari running down its western side and Pune Junction a kilometre north-east.
