Raviwar Peth, Pune — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Gold and silver shopfronts crowd Raviwar Peth, a peth in the old city of Pune, with the metal lane of Bohri Ali cutting through it.

About Raviwar Peth

Where to stay in Raviwar Peth

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Raviwar Peth is a working market quarter in the middle of Pune's old city, and rooms inside it are few. Bohri Ali sells metal, not beds. The lanes off Laxmi Road hold shopfronts, storerooms and upper-floor homes rather than hotels, so most visitors take a bed elsewhere in the old city and walk in past Sonya Maruti Chowk.

Pick this ground if you want jewellers' shutters going up under your window and the metal shops of Bhandi Ali a minute away. Budhwar Peth lies immediately west, and Kasba Peth is a short walk north.

About Raviwar Peth

What are the main landmarks in Raviwar Peth?

Raviwar Peth holds two of Pune's Grade I listed structures inside its own lanes. Someshwar Mandir faces the Laxminaryan temple. The pair stands at Kapad Ganj, the cloth market at the peth's heart, while Pushtimarg Mandir keeps the address 61 Raviwar Peth beside Daruwala Pul at the northern end.

A stone paar sits in Bhandi Ali, the utensil lane, and Saifee Masjid serves the Bohri families whose forebears were invited in to trade tin and iron. Vishrambaug Wada stands in Sadashiv Peth and the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum further west, both outside this peth.

What is the history of Raviwar Peth?

Raviwar Peth was called Malkapur before it took its day-name from Raviwar, the Marathi word for Sunday. Nilopant Mujumdar developed the peth. Merchants, bankers and jewellers traded and kept house here together, and by the 1790s the peth stood among the richest and most closely built quarters of Peshwa-era Pune.

Bohri merchants dealing in tin and iron were invited by the government to settle among them. Their lane keeps the name Bohri Ali. Gold and silver work has been the trade of Raviwar Peth ever since, and Kapad Ganj still marks where the cloth was sold.

Where is Raviwar Peth?

Raviwar Peth sits east of Budhwar Peth in Pune's old city, with Kasba Peth to the north, Ganesh Peth to the east, and Laxmi Road cutting through the middle.
