Where to stay in Sirhind

Where the beds are, and what that means for the visit.

Sirhind and Fatehgarh Sahib work as one place with two reasons to visit. The Mughal quarter around Aam Khas Bagh is the older draw, holding what survives of the imperial capital. Fatehgarh Sahib is where the pilgrims go.

Sirhind Mandi is the working third, with the market and the colleges, and it is the practical base if the visit is neither historical nor devotional.

About Sirhind

Sirhind was a capital before it was a town.

What is Sirhind known for?

It ran the Mughal administration of Eastern Punjab and held the road between Lahore and Delhi, and European travellers wrote about its splendours. Saints made the rest of its name. Shaykh Ahmad al-Faruqi al-Sirhindi, known as Imam-e-Rabbani, taught here in the Naqshbandi order, and the city drew scholars, poets, calligraphers, and historians for generations.

What are the main landmarks in Sirhind?

Aam Khas Bagh is the great survival, a Mughal garden complex from the era when Sirhind governed Eastern Punjab. Tradition credits the city with hundreds of mosques, gardens, tombs, caravansarais, and wells at its height, and enough remains to make the claim credible. The Khanda Museum holds the local collection.

Mata Gujri College and the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Polytechnic College carry names from the same Sikh history that fills the twin town.

What is the history of Sirhind?

Varahamihira called this country Satudar Desh in the Brihat Samhita, and a tribe of Sairindhas is the usual explanation for the present name. Huan Tsang, travelling in the seventh century, recorded Sirhind as the capital of Shatadru, the district of the river now called the Sutlej. The Chauhan Rajputs of Delhi held it in the twelfth century, and Prithvi Raj Chauhan made it a military outpost.

Jasrat Khokhar besieged it in 1421 and failed. He came back in 1431 with Sikander Tohfa, the governor of Lahore, and took a city the Afghans had already abandoned for the hills, where many of them were then killed. Under the Mughals it rose highest.

The name Sirhind stood for Malwa itself, and Shaykh Ahmad al-Faruqi al-Sirhindi lived and died here in that period.

Where is Sirhind?

Sirhind stands on the Punjab plain between the Sutlej and the road that has always run from Lahore to Delhi, which is the whole reason the Mughals put a provincial capital here. Fatehgarh Sahib adjoins it so closely that the two share a municipal council. The country around is flat and farmed, and Fatehgarh Sahib district takes its administration from the pair of them.

What is the climate of Sirhind?

Sirhind has the Punjab plain's year: hot before the monsoon, wet through it, and cold enough in winter for the fog that closes the Lahore to Delhi road most seasons. The Sutlej country is well watered by canal. That is what makes the district's farming reliable in a way the rainfall alone would not.

How do you get to Sirhind?

The road between Lahore and Delhi made this city and still defines its position, running through Punjab past Sirhind and Fatehgarh Sahib together. Rail serves the twin towns as well. Sirhind Mandi is the commercial arrival point, and the surrounding villages of Fatehgarh Sahib district come in to it rather than the other way round.
