Where to stay in Deoband
Where the beds are, and what that means for the visit.
Most visitors to Deoband come for one address. The quarter around Darul Uloom Deoband holds the seminary and the trade that has grown up around it over generations of students, and that is where a first visit belongs. Railway Road is the practical alternative, close to arrivals from Saharanpur and carrying the gurudwara that Partition brought.
The temple side is quieter and older. Choose by what you came to see.

About Deoband
One institution carries the name.
What is Deoband known for?
Darul Uloom Deoband is among the largest Islamic seminaries in India, and the Deobandi movement that spread from it took the town's name across the Muslim world. Students come from far beyond Uttar Pradesh. The older layers are Hindu, though, and the Tripura Bala Sundari Devi temple and the Radha-Navrangilal shrine both predate the seminary.
What are the main landmarks in Deoband?
Darul Uloom Deoband dominates, and its buildings are what most visitors photograph. The Tripura Bala Sundari Devi temple is the town's oldest puzzle: the inscription set at its door is of unknown date and has never been read. Shri Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu founded the Radha-Navrangilal temple here before he left for Vrindavan.
A gurudwara stands on Railway Road.
What is the history of Deoband?
The name is argued over. Devband is read as devi and van, the goddess and the forest that covered this ground in the age the Mahabharata describes, or as devi and vandan for the praise of the local Durga temples, or from Persian, where dev is a spirit and band an enclosure. Shri Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu, the Bhakti saint who founded the Radhavallabh Sampradaya, lived here in the sixteenth century before his renunciation.
The Ain-i-Akbari lists Deoband as a pargana under Saharanpur sarkar, with a brick fort standing at the time. Everything changed in 1866, when Darul Uloom Deoband was founded on 21 May by Muhammad Qasim Nanotawi, Fazlur Rahman Usmani, Sayyid Muhammad Abid, and others, and the movement that carries the town's name began there.
Where is Deoband?
Deoband stands on the plain of western Uttar Pradesh, in Saharanpur district and set between Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar on the road that joins them. Delhi lies well to the south. The ground is flat, low, and farmed, which is what the forest the name remembers was cleared to make, and the town sits close enough to both district towns that it has never needed to be large to matter.
What is the climate of Deoband?
The year here follows the upper Doab pattern, subtropical and monsoon-driven, with a long hot build-up, heavy summer rain, and cool foggy winters. Term follows the season. The seminary's calendar and the farming one both bend around the monsoon, which is the fixed point of the year in this part of Uttar Pradesh.
How do you get to Deoband?
Deoband sits on the road and rail line between Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar, and arrivals come through one or the other. Saharanpur is the divisional seat and the shorter hop. From Delhi the journey is a long half-day by road, which is the usual approach for visitors coming to the seminary from outside the state, and Railway Road takes traffic from the station into the town.
