Where to stay in Fyzābād
Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Fyzābād's rooms cluster near Gulab Bari and Bahu Begum ka Maqbara. The old capital quarter is the practical base for anyone here to see what the Awadh Kingdom's Nawabs built, and it keeps the Saryu within easy reach for an evening on the bank. Ayodhya changes the arithmetic.
The twin city is only about 6.5 km off and draws the pilgrimage traffic, so beds in Fyzābād often work out as the quieter option for a visitor who wants both Ram Janmabhoomi and Gulab Bari in the same trip. Ayodhya district holds both, and the administration runs from Ayodhya City rather than from here. Diwali is the exception.
Ayodhya is at its fullest then, and demand across both halves of the twin city rises with it, so a room left to the last minute in that season is a room left too late. Lucknow is the other option, about 130 km west. If you want the Nawabi monuments and the Saryu at an unhurried pace, a night in Fyzābād under Ayodhya Municipal Corporation's administration costs less time than a daily run out from the state capital.
About Fyzābād
The Awadh Kingdom began here.
What is Fyzābād known for?
Fyzābād served as its first capital, and the Nawabs left monuments that still define the place: Bahu Begum ka Maqbara and Gulab Bari among them. Ayodhya sits alongside. The twin city, about 6.5 km off, holds Ram Janmabhoomi and a central place in the Ramayana, which brings a different kind of visitor to the pair.
What are the main landmarks in Fyzābād?
Gulab Bari and Bahu Begum ka Maqbara are the Nawabi pair. Both were raised by the Nawabs who made Fyzābād the first capital of the Awadh Kingdom, and they remain the reason to walk the old town rather than drive straight through to Ayodhya. The twin city holds the rest.
Ram Janmabhoomi and the Ram statue stand on that side, in a place the Ramayana puts at the centre of its story.
What is the history of Fyzābād?
The Awadh Kingdom started from Fyzābād. It was the kingdom's first capital, and the Nawabs who ruled from it built the monuments that still carry the period's name: Bahu Begum ka Maqbara, known in English as the Tomb of Bahu Begum, and Gulab Bari. The Saryu gave the site its logic, and a capital on the southern bank of that river had water and the ancient neighbour of Ayodhya within an easy ride.
Awadh's older layer runs deeper still, since Ayodhya beside it is an ancient city of the Awadh region with a central role in the Ramayana, and the pair have long been read together. Administration shifted in 2018. Fyzābād had been the headquarters of Faizabad district and of Faizabad division until November 2018, when the district and division took Ayodhya's name instead.
The twin city arrangement followed. Fyzābād is now administered by Ayodhya Municipal Corporation, and Ayodhya City about 6.5 km off serves as the headquarters of Ayodhya district, which leaves the old Nawabi capital as one half of a single municipal body rather than a seat in its own right. Lucknow lies about 130 km west.
Where is Fyzābād?
Fyzābād sits on the southern bank of the Saryu. Ayodhya lies about 6.5 km off, close enough for the two to be called twin cities, and Ayodhya district frames both within the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh. Lucknow is 130 km west.
That places Fyzābād in the interior of India, on flat river country where the Saryu rather than any relief does the work of a landmark.
What is the climate of Fyzābād?
The Saryu marks the seasons here. Fyzābād lies inland in the subtropical band, so the year runs from a long building heat to the rains that lift the river, and then to the cool months when Ayodhya fills for Diwali. That is the season to come.
Heat and humidity make the middle of the year hard work for anyone planning to walk between Gulab Bari, the Maqbara, and the Saryu bank on the same day.
How do you get to Fyzābād?
Lucknow is the usual approach. The state capital lies about 130 km west, and the run east from it is the standard way into Fyzābād and Ayodhya alike. Ayodhya City is the closer hub.
Arriving there puts a traveller about 6.5 km from Fyzābād, which is a short enough hop that the choice between the two halves of the twin city is a question of where the bed is rather than of how to get in.
