What are the main landmarks in Adhamiyah?
The shrine and tomb of Imam Abu Hanifa anchor the whole district and gave it its name. Everything gathers around it. Nearby stands the Church of the Divine Wisdom, raised in 1932 among the older Muslim streets, a reminder of the mixed faiths that long shared this stretch of the Tigris.
Across the river rises the golden Al-Kadhimiya Mosque. The Ashaar Baghdad monument marks the modern city.
What is the history of Adhamiyah?
Adhamiyah grew up around the burial place of Imam Abu Hanifa, the eighth-century jurist known as the Great Imam. The name follows his title. From that shrine the quarter takes its Arabic form, al-A'zamiyah, and its aliases Al-Adhamiyah and Azamiya, spreading north along the east bank of the Tigris while Kadhimiya faced it from the far shore.
Faith shaped the ground. The Church of the Divine Wisdom, built in 1932, marks how varied that faith once was.
