Al-A'amiriya is a quiet residential quarter, not a hotel district. Rooms are hard to come by in this residential Baghdad quarter. Its streets sit between the Airport Road and Abu Ghraib Road, lined with houses and small mosques rather than lodgings, so most visitors base themselves in central Baghdad and travel out to it.
Stay near the Mansour district instead. That side holds the wider choice of rooms.

What are the main landmarks in Al-A'amiriya?
The Amiriyah shelter is the quarter's defining structure. Known formally as Public Shelter No. 25, it stands among the houses as a memorial to the civilians killed there in 1991. Neighbourhood mosques anchor the streets around it.
The Al-Firdaws and Al-Kubaisi mosques serve worshippers along the two main thoroughfares, Al-Amal Al-Shaabi and Al-Mantama, which carry local traffic through Al-A'amiriya.
What is the history of Al-A'amiriya?
Al-A'amiriya grew outward. It formed as a residential quarter on the western edge of Baghdad, along the roads leading toward Anbar Province, where the Airport Road and Abu Ghraib Road drew houses and small mosques out from the older city. Its name reached the wider world in 1991, when the Amiriyah shelter, Public Shelter No. 25, was struck during the Gulf War and hundreds of sheltering civilians died.
That night still marks the quarter. Rebuilt streets have gathered around the site since.

Al-A'amiriya lies in the Karkh and Mansour side of western Baghdad, between the districts of Al-Khadhra and Al-Ghazaliya on the way to Anbar Province.
