What is the history of Karrada?
Karrada grew as one of Baghdad's Christian merchant quarters. Chaldean, Syriac and Assyrian families settled along its streets and raised the churches that still mark the district, among them Sayidat al-Nejat Cathedral and the Chaldean Saint Joseph Cathedral Baghdad, giving the quarter a mixed devotional character unusual for the wider city. The name Sayidat al-Nejat, Our Lady of Salvation, carries the memory of the congregation attacked there, an event mourned across Baghdad.
