What is the history of Kadhimiya?
The shrine came first. Kadhimiya grew as a burial ground and pilgrimage site around the tombs of the imams enshrined in the Al-Kadhimiya Mosque, a holy place for Twelver Shia Muslims long before Baghdad's spreading urban edge reached out and folded it in. The city caught up to the shrine.
What had been a separate holy settlement on the west bank of the Tigris became one of Baghdad's nine administrative districts, its bazaar and lanes still turning around the golden domes that gave the quarter its name.
