What is the history of Dezful?
Dezful grew up around an ancient bridge. In Sasanian times, some seventeen hundred years ago, the Persian kings threw a great brick bridge across the Dez, said to be built by captured Roman soldiers, and a town rose to guard the crossing. Its very name means the bridge fort.
The city took its name from the bridge and the fortress that held it, and it stood on the road between the highlands and the rich Khuzestan plain. The old town mastered the heat. In one of the hottest corners of the land, the people built a dense maze of shaded brick alleys and dug cool underground rooms, the shavadun, to escape the summer fire.
Water and land made it rich. The Dez watered orchards and fields of the plain, and Dezful grew as a market for the region's grain and citrus. The ancient bridge still carries the road.
