Where you stay in Īzeh turns on the small town centre. The streets around the bazaar and the square keep the shops, the tea houses, and the roads to the reliefs within reach, and staying in town suits anyone here for the carvings. The bazaar stirs in the morning.

The reliefs of Shekaft-e Salman fill a cliff shelter nearby, while old mounds and a small lake mark the plain around the town.
What is the history of Īz̄eh?
Īzeh is a very old place in the mountains. In the days of the Elamites, three thousand years ago, this valley was a royal seat called Ayapir, and its kings cut great reliefs into the cliffs, showing rows of worshippers and feasts of the gods. The carvings still stand in the rock.
At Kul-e Farah and Shekaft-e Salman the old Elamite scenes survive, among the best left anywhere from that lost kingdom. The town kept its place through the ages. Under later kings it was known as Malamir, and in time it became the seat of the Atabegs who ruled the mountains of Luristan, guarding the roads of the Bakhtiari country.
The herders moved through with the seasons. Each spring and autumn the Bakhtiari drove their flocks past the town on the long migration over the Zagros. The old reliefs still watch the valley. Īzeh keeps its ancient stones in the hills of Khuzestan.

What is the climate of Īz̄eh?
Īzeh has a dry highland climate. Hot, dry summers cross the mountain plain, and the winters turn cold with snow on the peaks around, milder than the plains of Khuzestan below. Snow caps the ridges in winter.

How do you get to Īz̄eh?
Īzeh lies in the mountains northeast of Ahvaz in Khuzestan. A winding road climbs from Ahvaz and the plains up to the valley, and other roads run east into the Bakhtiari hills toward Isfahan. Buses reach the mountain towns around.
