About Afsariyeh

Where to stay in Afsariyeh

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Afsariyeh keeps few hotel beds of its own. As a working residential quarter in south-east Tehran, it sends most visitors toward the central districts of the capital, where the rooms cluster, while the neighbourhood itself is reached out along the Khavaran corridor toward the Azadegan complex. Base yourself in central Tehran instead.

If you come for the day, come for the Azadegan Water Park and the market streets, then return to a base in Tehran for the night.

About Afsariyeh

What are the main landmarks in Afsariyeh?

The Azadegan Water Park anchors Afsariyeh. Its slides and pools draw families out to the south-east edge of Tehran, and the park's water roller-coaster and aquatic maze give the residential neighbourhood the single leisure landmark that carries its name beyond the market streets. Water is the draw here.

The wider Azadegan grounds frame the park along the Khavaran corridor.

What is the history of Afsariyeh?

Afsariyeh grew at the south-east edge of Tehran as informal housing spread across its ground. The quarter began in part as squatted settlement, and in 1977 the state ordered the eviction of the shanty towns that had taken root in Afsariyeh, a clearance that reshaped the neighbourhood as the capital of Iran pushed south-east. Squatters came first.

Formal streets and the Azadegan grounds followed along the Khavaran corridor.

Where is Afsariyeh?

Afsariyeh sits in south-east Tehran, a temperate residential quarter whose streets run out toward the Khavaran corridor and the Azadegan grounds at the edge of the capital. The ground eases south.
