The Takeshima Aquarium and the Takeshima Fantasy Museum sit at the seaward end of Gamagōri, and a room facing that water puts both, plus the Kaihinkan Marine Center House, inside a short walk. This is the seafront half. Everything with a marine subject belongs to it, and a visitor whose reason for coming is the aquarium or the shore has no reason to look further inland for a bed.
The Seaside Literary Memorial sits on the same side. Inland is the working city. Gamagori City Museum and the Gamagōri Museum of Earth, Life and the Sea give the inland half its own subjects, and a base there suits anyone who would rather sleep in a town than beside the water.
The city is small either way. Gamagōri covers little ground, so the two halves are a matter of preference rather than of distance, and a visitor can hold one base and still see the aquarium, the museums and the memorial in a day. Aichi Prefecture holds bigger cities.
None of them has Takeshima, which is the one thing Gamagōri keeps that the rest of the prefecture cannot borrow.

What is the history of Gamagōri?
The sea came first. Gamagōri's whole record is coastal, and the institutions that hold it, the Takeshima Aquarium, the Kaihinkan Marine Center House, the Gamagōri Museum of Earth, Life and the Sea, all take their subject from the water rather than from any inland industry. Takeshima gave the place a name to trade on.
Two of the six institutions carry it, which is what happens when a small city finds one feature that visitors will travel for. The city dates from 1954. Municipal status arrived in the middle of the century and set a boundary around a compact stretch of the Aichi Prefecture coast, and that shape has framed Gamagōri ever since.
Museums came after that. Gamagori City Museum keeps the town's own record, and the Seaside Literary Memorial marks the writers who worked with this coast as a subject, which is a claim few Aichi Prefecture cities of this size can make. Aichi Prefecture holds the frame.
The Takeshima Fantasy Museum reads as the least historical of them. It answers to visitors rather than to scholarship, and its presence under the same name as the aquarium shows how completely Gamagōri has organised itself around one stretch of shore.
Where is Gamagōri?
Gamagōri holds a small piece of the Aichi Prefecture coast, compact enough that the shore, the town and the museums all sit within a few minutes of each other. Takeshima is the marker. The name attaches to the aquarium and the museum both, and it fixes the seaward edge of a city whose ground runs back only a short way from the water.
Little of it is far from the sea.
What is the climate of Gamagōri?
The sea sets the range. Gamagōri lies in the subtropical band north of the equator, and its water frontage keeps the extremes off, so summers arrive humid and heavy while winters rarely turn hard on the coast. Rain follows the warm months.
The Takeshima Aquarium and the indoor museums cover the wet weeks, which is useful in a city that otherwise asks to be walked along the water.
How do you get to Gamagōri?
Everything here is close together. Gamagōri sits on the Aichi Prefecture coast, and the approach to it ends at the water, which is where the Takeshima Aquarium and the Kaihinkan Marine Center House both stand. The rest goes on foot.
