What are the main landmarks in Kusagae?
The district's name has its monument just outside it. In the grounds of the Kusagae community hall, in Ropponmatsu 1-chome, a stone carries the poem Ōtomo no Tabito wrote in 730 about a crane feeding alone in the inlet of Kusagae. Otherwise what draws anyone into these streets is the walk out toward Ōhori, Ropponmatsu and Torikai, with Baikōen and Imagawa a little further out.
What is the history of Kusagae?
Kusagae was once an inlet of the sea. In 730, returning from Dazaifu to Yamato, Ōtomo no Tabito wrote of the cranes feeding in the inlet of Kusagae, a poem collected in the Man'yōshū, and an old map of Hakata from the days of Taira no Kiyomori marks Kusagae as the western inlet of the bay. Kuroda Nagamasa, first lord of the Fukuoka domain, filled part of it to make the outer moat of Fukuoka Castle, and in 1929 the water became Ōhori Park.
Now it is quiet housing.
