Nerima, Tokyo — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Nerima is one of the 23 special wards of Tokyo, a mainly residential ward set across the northwest of the Wards Area.

About Nerima

Where to stay in Nerima

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Nerima spreads its beds through quiet residential blocks rather than one hotel strip, so the corner you pick sets the tone of the whole stay across this northwest ward of Tokyo. Choose your part of Nerima first. Stays near the Nerima Art Museum place the ward's galleries and its leafy streets within an easy walk, while beds toward the Kurihara Ruins trade bustle for older ground and a slower pace.

A calmer base suits families.

About Nerima

What are the main landmarks in Nerima?

The Nerima Art Museum anchors the ward's cultural life. Its galleries hold the ward's public collection, and the Kurihara Ruins lie away to the older side of Nerima, where the archaeological ground records settlement long before any railway crossed the plain toward central Tokyo. Museums carry the story here.

The Nakano Historical Museum keeps records of the wider district's past, and together these sites give a residential ward its landmarks without a single dominant monument.

What is the history of Nerima?

Nerima was created as a ward in 1947, splitting away to become the 23rd and newest of the special wards of Tokyo. The Kurihara Ruins show that the ground itself was settled far earlier, long before the modern ward lines were drawn across the northwest of the Wards Area. Fields ran here before the streets did.

What had been open agricultural land on the edge of the growing city filled slowly with houses, and the ward that took shape stayed mainly residential rather than turning into an industrial or commercial core among the special wards.

Where is Nerima?

Nerima lies across the northwest of the Wards Area of Tokyo, in Japan, a mainly residential ward on the inland side of the special wards, away from the bay.
