Shinagawa splits its beds between the old road and the reclaimed bay. Ōimachi, the ward's commercial core and the seat of its offices, keeps the densest cluster of rooms above department stores and dining lanes, a short hop from the Shinagawa Historical Museum. Sleep at Ōimachi for the shops. The Tennōz waterfront pulls the other way, dropping guests among converted warehouses beside the Terrada Art Complex and the canal berths where the Museum of Logistics recalls the port trade that built these flats.

Shinagawa collects its sights around water and art. Aqua Park Shinagawa and the older Shinagawa Aquarium send families toward the tanks, while the Ebara Hatakeyama Museum of Art keeps a tea-ceremony collection in a quiet garden and the Nikon Museum traces the optics that the ward's factories helped make. The tanks pull the crowds.

What is the history of Shinagawa?
Shinagawa took its present shape in 1943. That year the older wards of Shinagawa and Ebara were merged into one borough of Tokyo, joining the harbour front to the plateau streets behind it. The old road came first.
Shinagawa-juku was the first post-town out of Edo on the Tōkaidō, a lodging and checkpoint quarter whose inns lined the coast road, and the flats that now carry the Tennōz warehouses were later pushed out into the bay as landfill. The Shinagawa Historical Museum keeps that story. Its collection runs from the post-town to the port.
