About Shinjuku
What are the main landmarks in Shinjuku?
Shinjuku carries an unusual density of museums. The Sompo Museum of Art rises inside a tower west of Shinjuku Station, while the Ōta Memorial Museum of Art gathers ukiyo-e woodblock prints a short walk from the ward's main lines. Smaller halls dot the side streets.
The Yayoi Kusama Museum, the Shinjuku Historical Museum, and the Tokyo Toy Museum each pull visitors off the main concourse into quieter corners of the ward.
What is the history of Shinjuku?
The ward took its present form in 1947. Shinjuku grew from a post-town on the old road out of central Tokyo into the metropolis' second core, its rail junction pulling business and entertainment toward the west side of the city. Older ground survives in patches.
Kagurazaka held onto its hanamachi geisha quarter, and the Shinjuku Historical Museum keeps the record of how the district changed around Shinjuku Station.
