Most visitors base themselves in the Oshiage streets under the Tokyo Skytree, where the tower's shopping floors and the Sumida Aquarium sit above the station concourse. The Oshiage streets hold most beds. If you want an evening among sumo stables and old riverside lanes rather than the tower crowds, Ryōgoku makes a calmer foothold close to the Edo-Tokyo Museum and the arena.
Quieter beds thin out along the Sumida River, where the Sumida Hokusai Museum sits within an easy stroll of the water.

The Tokyo Skytree towers over the ward. Its broadcasting mast, observation decks and the Sumida Aquarium at its foot draw the largest crowds, while the Ryōgoku quarter keeps the ward's older draws close together. The Edo-Tokyo Museum reconstructs the old lower city, the Sumo Museum records the wrestlers of the neighbouring arena, and the Japanese Sword Museum sets its blades along the riverbank.

What is the history of Sumida?
Sumida took its present shape in 1947, joining two older riverside districts on the eastern bank of the Sumida River within Tokyo. Merchants worked these streets. The lower-city quarters grew as workshops and trading blocks, a past the Edo-Tokyo Museum now sets out through its full-scale reconstructions of the old town.
The printmaker Katsushika Hokusai was born here, and the Sumida Hokusai Museum keeps that link. Ryōgoku became the home of sumo, a wrestling tradition the Sumo Museum records beside the ward's arena.
