Fossegrenda is a residential district in southern Trondheim, set above the Nidelva in central Norway (Trøndelag).
About Fossegrenda

Where to stay in Fossegrenda
Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.
Fossegrenda is a quiet residential base on the southern edge of Trondheim, away from the hotels of the centre. Lodging on this edge is scarce. Most visitors who want this side of the Nidelva take a self-catering room or stay with the wider choice of lodging in central Trondheim, then come out to the falls at Leirfossene and the riverside paths.
The district suits drivers and travellers content to be a short way south of the old town, near the green valley rather than the harbour.
About Fossegrenda
What are the main landmarks in Fossegrenda?
Leira kapell stands close by. The small chapel serves this southern reach of Trondheim, where the Nidelva becomes the district's great natural marker, its gorge cut deep below the houses and worked at Leirfossene a short way along the water. Across the slope sit Nidarvoll and Leira.
The road out through Bratsbergveien carries the district toward the hills.
What is the history of Fossegrenda?
The district takes its name from the water. Fossegrenda means the waterfall hamlet, a name that grew from its closeness to Leirfossene, the hydroelectric power station that harnesses the falls of the Nidelva. The river drove the wheels here long before the streets of southern Trondheim filled in around them.
What had been a riverside hamlet on the edge of the city became, over time, one of its outer residential quarters.
Where is Fossegrenda?
Fossegrenda lies about five kilometres south of the centre of Trondheim. The Nidelva bounds it to the south-west, the districts of Nidarvoll and Bratsbergveien to the north-east, and Leira to the south-east, placing this corner of the city where the river valley climbs away from the older streets.
