Midtbyen is where Trondheim began. The peninsula carried the medieval city around the shrine that became Nidarosdomen, the pilgrimage cathedral that made the place a centre of the early Norwegian church. Fire and rebuilding shaped the streets.
The wide grid that fills the quarter was laid out after great fires swept the old wooden town, and the centuries left their churches behind, from Vår Frue kirke to the cloister at Bakke kloster across the river, all gathered in this historic core of the city.
