The municipality was created in 1838. Strinda ran as its own unit for well over a century before dissolution in 1964 handed its ground to Trondheim, having taken in the land that later became Malvik Municipality and having reached as far as the lake Jonsvatnet. Sør-Trøndelag was the county of the day.
Its offices were never on Strinda ground at all, sitting instead on Kjøpmansgata in Trondheim, across the Nidelva.
