What is Chorzów known for?

Spread along the boundary with Katowice, it holds the Silesian Zoological Garden, the Silesian Planetarium, and the Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park, whose translocated timber buildings include the Evangelical church from Bytom-Bobrek. Football fills the Silesian Stadium, where the Monument to Gerard Cieślik stands. Industry shaped everything else.

The Museum of Steel Industry records that trade, and the Prezydent winding tower still marks where the pits were.

What are the main landmarks in Chorzów?

The Silesian Planetarium sits on a hill inside the Culture Park, and the Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park below it has moved timber buildings onto open ground, among them the Evangelical church from Bytom-Bobrek. Saint Lawrence church, Martin Luther church, and Saint Joseph church carry much of the older parish fabric. The town hall faces the Nicolaus Copernicus Monument.

Two towers dominate. The Bytkow TV Tower and the Prezydent winding tower stand at opposite ends of the built-up ground, one a mast, the other a relic of the pits.

What is the history of Chorzów?

The written record starts in 1257. Chorzów Stary holds the older core, and the Mary Magdalene church there belongs to the settlement that stood before coal and steel remade the ground around it. Industry did the remaking.

Where is Chorzów?

Chorzów sits on the Silesian Highlands, with the Rawa threading through it and Katowice immediately alongside. The built-up ground runs continuously into the neighbouring cities of the Metropolis GZM, so the boundary is administrative rather than visible, and the Culture Park is the one wide green break in it. The city covers thirty-three square kilometres.

Chorzów Stary and Chorzów Batory sit at either end of that ground. Świętochłowice and Siemianowice Śląskie press against the same edge.

What is the climate of Chorzów?

The Silesian Highlands set the terms. Chorzów lies well inland in the temperate band, with no coast near enough to soften either end of the year, so winter and summer pull further apart than they do nearer the sea. Four seasons, plainly marked.

How do you get to Chorzów?

Arrivals come through Katowice. The two cities share a boundary along the Culture Park, and inside the Metropolis GZM the run between them is short enough that Chorzów works as a base for the whole conurbation. The Silesian Stadium and the Silesian Zoological Garden sit on that same seam, which makes the Katowice side the easiest way in.

Chorzów Batory and Chorzów Stary lie further out. Both still fall within the same built-up ground.
