What is the history of Tychy?
Tychy began as a village by a brewery. For centuries a small Silesian village stood here, known for the beer brewed at the local prince's brewery since the sixteen-twenties, a brew that grew famous across the region. The old brewery still pours.
Its cellars and brewhouse worked on through the years, and Tyskie beer became one of the best known in Poland, carried far beyond Silesia. After the war a new city was built. When the mines and mills of Silesia needed workers, the state raised a whole new town beside the old village, block by block on the fields, and called the new town Nowe Tychy.
The plan drew the whole town. Architects laid out estates by the letters of the alphabet, with squares, churches, and parks between the blocks, and Tychy grew into a city of a hundred thousand, keeping its brewery, its plan, and its lake. The blocks still stand in ordered rows.

Tychy lies in the south of Poland, on the flat edge of the Upper Silesian plain. The city sits between the coalfield to the north and the wooded hills to the south, on a low plain of ponds and pine woods, with the Paprocany lake on its southern edge and the Beskid mountains not far beyond.
