Where to stay in Dolgoprudnyy

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Anyone booking here is really choosing how much of Moscow they intend to see, because Dolgoprudnyy works as a base for the capital at least as much as a destination of its own. The pond decides the rest. Streets near the long pond that gave the town its name sit closest to the shops, the Saint George Church and the roads running south.

Kuznetsov's manor survives in the town as well. Evenings by the pond stay hushed. If you want an easy run into Moscow with green ground within walking distance, that side is the safe pick.

Vinogradovo is the other pole. The estate grounds there hold the Church of Saint Vladimir, the old horse yard, the carriage house and the park, and a room near them buys quiet ground at the cost of distance from the centre. Dmitrovskoye Shosse carries the traffic past.

Out at Vodniki and Severny the town frays into water, allotments and older churches, including the Church of the Saviour Not Made by Hands, so beds that far out suit drivers rather than anyone walking. Trakhoneevo lies further still, its Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos standing clear of the built-up ground.

About Dolgoprudnyy

What is Dolgoprudnyy known for?

The name comes from water: Долгий пруд, the long narrow pond in the northeastern part of Dolgoprudnyy, gave the town the word it has carried since 1931. People shorten it to Dolgopa. Past the housing, older ground survives at Vinogradovo, where the estate park, the Church of Saint Vladimir and a cluster of service buildings still stand together.

Moscow starts 20 kilometres to the south.

What are the main landmarks in Dolgoprudnyy?

Vinogradovo carries most of the list. The Church of Saint Vladimir stands on the estate ground beside the park, the horse yard, the carriage house and the barnyard, all of them survivals of the Vinogradovo Estate. Churches mark the older hamlets.

Trakhoneevo, Arkhangelskoye-Tyurikovo and Vodniki each keep one, and inside the town itself the Saint George Church, the Saint Sergius of Radonezh Church and Kuznetsov's manor hold their own ground.

What is the history of Dolgoprudnyy?

Burial mounds came first. The kurgan cemetery known as Долгопрудная marks this ground long before any town existed, and the estates that followed, Vinogradovo and Arkhangelsk-Tyurikova among them, held the land as villages and manor farms. Churches went up with them.

The Church of Saint Vladimir at Vinogradovo, the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Arkhangelskoye-Tyurikovo and the church at Trakhoneevo all belong to that older layer. The town proper dates from 1931. It was founded under the name Дирижаблестрой, and the settlement that grew from it gradually pulled the surrounding villages, Vodniki, Severny and Trakhoneevo, into one municipality on the road north out of Moscow.

A long narrow pond gave it the name it kept. Долгий пруд, in the northeastern part of the town, is the source of Dolgoprudnyy, and the short form Dolgopa is what people use in speech. Later building filled the gaps between the old villages, leaving the Vinogradovo Estate, Kuznetsov's manor and a scatter of churches embedded in newer housing. An oceanarium stands on Dmitrovskoye Shosse.

Where is Dolgoprudnyy?

The town spreads over flat ground about 20 kilometres north of Moscow, covering some 31 square kilometres of housing, woodland and water between Vinogradovo and Vodniki. The long pond lies northeast. Долгий пруд, narrow and drawn out, occupies that corner of Dolgoprudnyy and gave the place its name, and Dmitrovskoye Shosse runs the length of the built-up ground.

What is the climate of Dolgoprudnyy?

The seasons here swing hard. Deep in the temperate interior with no sea anywhere near, Dolgoprudnyy takes long frozen winters that lock the long pond solid and short warm summers that bring thunder over the flat ground. Warmth is late arriving each year.

The park at Vinogradovo stands bare for months, then turns green in a matter of weeks.

How do you get to Dolgoprudnyy?

Everything runs toward Moscow. Dmitrovskoye Shosse is the artery, carrying road traffic the 20 kilometres down into the capital and back north into Moscow Oblast. Most arrivals are local.

Dolgoprudnyy sits inside Moscow's orbit rather than apart from it, so people reach it as part of a day that starts or ends in the city, and few travellers come to it as a first stop.
