Where to stay in Serpukhov
Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.
Most beds sit near the Serpukhov historical-art museum. The merchant streets around it carry the shops and the easiest walking, and the Serpukhov Kremlin ground is close enough to climb before breakfast. Rooms are plain here.
The Church of the Theotokos of Kazan, the Assumption Church and the Holy Trinity Church at Krasnaya Gora fall into the same circuit, which makes the centre the obvious base for a first visit. The monasteries change the calculation. Anyone booking for the Vysotsky Monastery or the Vladychny Monastery should check which side of the city the address falls on, since the two keep separate precincts and the walk between them is not short.
The Raspyatsky Monastery makes a third. Beds thin out fast beyond the middle. Pushchino-na-Nare lies outside the built city altogether, carrying the Nara in its name, and a night there suits anyone who would rather look at the Oka valley than at a street.
Stay if you want monasteries, a museum and a river inside one day.
About Serpukhov
Serpukhov counts three monasteries.
What is Serpukhov known for?
The Vysotsky Monastery, the Vladychny Monastery and the Raspyatsky Monastery all stand inside one city, while the Serpukhov Kremlin marks the ground the whole place grew from. Churches run past a dozen. The Serpukhov historical-art museum carries the paintings that outsiders travel for, and the Oka and the Nara give the city the water that fixed its position in the first place.
What are the main landmarks in Serpukhov?
Three monasteries carry the list. The Vysotsky Monastery, the Vladychny Monastery and the Raspyatsky Monastery each keep a precinct of their own, while the Serpukhov Kremlin marks where the city started. Churches follow in number.
The Church of Our Savior Not Made by Hands in Serpukhov, the Church of the Crucifixion, the Bogoyavlenskaya Church and the Krestovozdvizhenskaya Church stand among the many, and the Serpukhov historical-art museum holds the collection people travel for. Pushchino-na-Nare sits outside the city.
What is the history of Serpukhov?
Serpukhov dates from 1339. The city began at the confluence of the Oka and the Nara, and the Serpukhov Kremlin belongs to those first centuries, when a fortified point on a river crossing was worth raising in stone. Monastic ground came with it.
The Vysotsky Monastery, the Vladychny Monastery and the Raspyatsky Monastery each took their own precinct as the city grew. Churches multiplied with the trade. The Church of Our Savior Not Made by Hands in Serpukhov, the Church of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple, the Church of the Protection of the Theotokos and the Church of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple went up as building spread away from the kremlin ground.
Merchants paid for much of that. The Bogoyavlenskaya Church, the Krestovozdvizhenskaya Church, the Assumption Church and the Resurrection Church belong to the same centuries, and the Serpukhov historical-art museum keeps the city's collection of art. Roads and rails arrived in their turn.
The Moscow-Tula railway runs through Serpukhov and the Moscow-Simferopol highway passes it on the way south, which put the city on the main line of movement out of Moscow. Elijah the Prophet church and the Pecherskaya Church survive among the newer streets.
Where is Serpukhov?
Serpukhov stands on the Oka. The Nara comes in at the city, and the ground between the two carries some 32 square kilometres of built streets, monastery precincts and the older kremlin site, 99 kilometres south from Moscow. Pushchino-na-Nare takes the smaller river's name.
The Oka valley is what the city looks out over, and the country beyond it opens south.
What is the climate of Serpukhov?
Ice closes the Oka each winter. The river and the Nara run under it for months, and the precincts of the Vysotsky Monastery and the Vladychny Monastery take on the emptiness of the season when nothing grows. Green returns late.
The Serpukhov historical-art museum takes the visitors who arrive before it does, and the Oka valley is worth the walk only once the water is open again.
How do you get to Serpukhov?
The Moscow-Tula railway runs through Serpukhov. That line is how many arrive, and the Moscow-Simferopol highway carries the rest, leaving the city 99 kilometres south from Moscow and 72 kilometres from the Moscow Ring Road. The centre is walkable from there.
The Serpukhov Kremlin ground, the Serpukhov historical-art museum and the Church of the Theotokos of Kazan sit close together, while the Vysotsky Monastery and the Vladychny Monastery need a longer leg.
