Where to stay in Krasnogorsk
Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
The Moskva River sets the frame, and the choice of bed runs between the estate ground at Znamenskoye-Gubailovo and the older village streets of Pavshino. The estate side is greener. Krasnogorsk park and the Krasnogorsk children park lie on that side, the main building and horse yard of the Gubailovo estate stand within the grounds, and the Chapel of merchants Polyakov is a short walk from them.
Families book there. Pavshino is the other half, with the Saint Nicholas Church, the Church of Theotokos of Bogolyubovo and the rest of the Pavshino churches ensemble on ground that was a village before the town existed. Rooms there are plainer.
Golfers stay out at the Moscow Country Club Resort instead, which puts the course at the door and the town at arm's length, and business callers at the Russian State Film and Photo Archive tend to want the centre. Moscow begins at the boundary. That closeness means a night in Krasnogorsk is often a matter of parking and access rather than of wanting the town itself, though Arkhangelskoye is reason enough for one.
The Vadim Zadorogny Technical Museum keeps its own visitors nearby.
About Krasnogorsk
Golf and estates carry the name.
What is Krasnogorsk known for?
The Moscow Country Club Resort keeps an 18-hole course that draws players out of the capital, while Znamenskoye-Gubailovo and Arkhangelskoye are the two classical estates that give the district its older reputation. Two collections sit apart from all that, the Russian State Film and Photo Archive and the Vadim Zadorogny Technical Museum. Snejcom adds another name to the list.
What are the main landmarks in Krasnogorsk?
Znamenskoye-Gubailovo is the anchor, and the Gubailovo estate keeps its main building, its horse yard and three flanking wings inside the grounds. Pavshino holds the churches. The Saint Nicholas Church, the Church of Theotokos of Bogolyubovo and the wider churches ensemble stand there, while the Church of the Theotokos of the Sign and the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos belong to the town itself.
Three collections complete it, the Russian State Film and Photo Archive, the Vadim Zadorogny Technical Museum and the Memorial Museum of German Anti-Fascists.
What is the history of Krasnogorsk?
People were on this ground very early. The Penyagino hillfort and the first Mitino burial mound cemetery, called the Great Grave, are the oldest sites recorded here, and both predate anything that could be called a town. Estates came next.
Znamenskoye-Gubailovo grew into a classical landholding with a main building, a horse yard and wings to either side, and the merchants Polyakov added a chapel of their own within it. Pavshino was a village then, and its Saint Nicholas Church, its Church of Theotokos of Bogolyubovo and the rest of the ensemble date from that period rather than from the town. The town dates from 1932.
Krasnogorsk was constituted then and became the administrative centre of Krasnogorsky District, laid out on the Moskva River against the boundary of Moscow. The Russian State Film and Photo Archive settled here and holds the national record on film, while the Memorial Museum of German Anti-Fascists records the years of the war from a particular angle. Krasnogorsk park was laid out for the town.
Later additions run from the Vadim Zadorogny Technical Museum to Snejcom and the Moscow Country Club Resort, and Arkhangelskoye still stands as the older kind of showpiece nearby.
Where is Krasnogorsk?
Krasnogorsk covers about 66 square kilometres on the Moskva River, hard against the northwestern boundary of Moscow. The river is the fixed line. Pavshino and Znamenskoye-Gubailovo sit within the same city ground, the Penyagino hillfort marks higher land at one edge, and Krasnogorsk park and the children park break the built-up blocks with trees.
Krasnogorsky District runs on beyond.
What is the climate of Krasnogorsk?
The Moskva River carries ice through the cold months, and the open estate ground at Znamenskoye-Gubailovo holds snow long after the streets have been cleared. Golf waits for the thaw. The 18-hole course at the Moscow Country Club Resort works to a short season, which is part of why the Vadim Zadorogny Technical Museum and the Memorial Museum of German Anti-Fascists take so much of the winter trade.
Summer is the estate season.
How do you get to Krasnogorsk?
Moscow is next door. The town runs up against the northwestern boundary of the capital, so the approach is a city one rather than a run out into open country. Krasnogorsk works as the administrative centre of Krasnogorsky District, which puts the district roads through it and makes Pavshino and Znamenskoye-Gubailovo easy to reach from the middle.
The Moscow Country Club Resort lies further out, and Arkhangelskoye is a separate trip again.
