Kiovo came before Lobnya. The village and its Church of the Holy Mandylion were on this ground while the land around was still worked from estates, and the Kiovo-Spasskoye estate was the landholding that organised it. A park and a wing survive from it.
Lobnya itself dates from 1902. The twentieth century did the rest, and the town spread over about 30 square kilometres of Moscow Oblast within reach of the capital. War left its mark on the town.
Two mass graves of Soviet soldiers are kept here, listed and tended, and they are the plainest record Lobnya holds of the war years. The Church of the Holy Mandylion still stands at Kiovo, and the estate park kept its trees while blocks of housing went up on the ground around them. Only the surviving wing of the Kiovo-Spasskoye house remains of the estate buildings themselves.
The town keeps its place in Moscow Oblast as one of the smaller centres northwest of Moscow. Kiovo remains the older name on the map, attached to the church and to the estate that carried it, while Lobnya is the name of everything built since 1902.

What is the climate of Lobnya?
The estate park at Kiovo-Spasskoye shows the year better than any street does, bare from autumn through to a late thaw and heavy with leaf for a short stretch after it. Snow arrives early. Inland Moscow Oblast has no sea to steady the swing, so the cold runs long and the warm months are compressed into a narrow part of the year.

Moscow is the reference point. The town lies northwest of the capital and inside Moscow Oblast, close enough that most arrivals are day travel from the city rather than a journey planned around a stay.
