Everything here began with a hermit. In the fourteenth century, Sergius of Radonezh withdrew into the forest to pray and founded a small wooden monastery in the wilderness. Others followed the holy man.
Around his cell grew the Trinity Lavra of Saint Sergius, which became the greatest monastery in Russia and the spiritual centre of the whole Orthodox world. Tsars and pilgrims came to the gates. Ivan the Terrible ordered its great Assumption Cathedral built, and the fortress-monastery later withstood a long siege in the Time of Troubles behind its mighty walls.
Faith and stone grew together. The tall bell tower climbed above the domes, the Pyatnitskaya Tower guarded the ramparts, and the tsars endowed the cloister with gold. Outside the walls, the town of Sergiyev Posad spread as a place of icon-painters and toymakers, a craft the Museum of Toys still keeps.
