Where to stay in Solnechnogorsk
Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Senezh Lake decides most stays here. Rooms with a view over the water are what Solnechnogorsk is asked for, and the shore lies far enough from the Moscow-Saint Petersburg Highway that traffic noise is not the thing guests notice. The Travel Palace stands inland from that shore on the old road frontage, its main building and the wing beside it giving the centre a face older than anything around them.
Saint Nicholas Church is a short walk on. The station side is the practical alternative for anyone travelling through. Podsolnechnaya railway station puts trains towards Moscow and towards Saint Petersburg within reach of a bed, and the Western water tower and the Eastern water tower standing over the platforms make the area easy to find.
Beds there are plain. The Church of Transfiguration is the other building worth planning a walk around, and it belongs to the same older town as the palace rather than to the railway quarter. Anyone stopping for one night before the road north suits the station side, while a weekend built around Senezh Lake is better spent on the shore.
Solnechnogorsky District spreads well past the town, so a car changes what is reachable in a day. Moscow is close enough to fall back on when rooms fill.

The road came first. Traffic between Moscow and Saint Petersburg passed this point long before there was much of a town, and the Travel Palace was built for that road, its main building and wing set out as one composition. Senezh Lake lay beside it.

Rail changed the scale. Solnechnogorsk became the administrative centre of Solnechnogorsky District within Moscow Oblast, and the station kept the older name Podsolnechnaya alongside it. Both capitals shaped what got built here. War reached the town.
A mass grave of Soviet soldiers records that, and it lies among the same streets as the palace and the churches, which is why a walk through the centre covers several centuries without leaving one district. The highway still carries traffic past the same frontage.

The town covers about 21 square kilometres north-west of Moscow, on the coast of that lake and on both the Moscow-Saint Petersburg Highway and the Moscow-Saint Petersburg railway. What is the climate of Solnechnogorsk?
Senezh Lake freezes in the deep months, and the town's calendar bends around that, since a shore which fills through the warm season turns into a flat white plain for a good part of the year. Winds come off the water. Nothing shelters the town from the continental swing between a long winter and a short summer, so the Travel Palace and Saint Nicholas Church see very different crowds in January and in July.

The Moscow-Saint Petersburg Highway runs straight through, which makes the car the usual way in and puts Solnechnogorsk on the road between the two capitals rather than at the end of a branch. Trains stop at Podsolnechnaya railway station. The Moscow-Saint Petersburg railway is the line, and the Western water tower and the Eastern water tower beside the platforms are the marker to look for on arrival.
