The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
Vidnoye sits against the Moscow city limits, which changes the calculation for a bed. A room here is easier to find than one inside the capital, and it still puts the Svyato-Ekaterininsky Monastery, Sukhanovo and the whole of Leninsky District within an easy morning. The centre is the 1949 plan.
Shkolnaya street 22A, 24A and 26A are listed blocks of that plan, and the parterre and gardens of Sovetskaya Square lie among them, so a stay in the middle of town is a stay inside a designed ensemble. Sukhanovo is the other choice. The estate keeps its main house, the estate bridge, the park with lime avenues and the Milkmaid with jug statue, and the Sukhanovo Mausoleum stands among them as the piece people travel for.
Beds there are scarce. Anyone who wants churches rather than architecture can work outward instead, to the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Tarychevo, the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Tabolovo, Saint Nicholas Church at Ermolino and the Church of Elijah the Prophet at Dydyldino. The Timokhovo-Salazkino estate fills the same kind of day.
A car or a local bus decides whether two of these fit into one afternoon or only one does.

What is Vidnoye known for?
The Svyato-Ekaterininsky Monastery keeps its enclosure inside a town laid out in 1949, while the Sukhanovo estate holds its main house, its park and the Sukhanovo Mausoleum. What is the history of Vidnoye?
Estates came first. Sukhanovo was laid out with a main house, a park and a bridge, and the Sukhanovo Mausoleum was raised there, with a clergy house and the horse yard wings completing the working parts of the estate. The Timokhovo-Salazkino estate stood on the same country, and its main house survives.
Villages carried the rest. Tarychevo, Tabolovo, Ermolino and Dydyldino each kept a church, and those four buildings are the oldest fabric anywhere near the modern streets. The Svyato-Ekaterininsky Monastery belongs to that older layer too.
Then 1949 changed the map. Vidnoye was founded in that year and built to a plan, and Shkolnaya street 22A, 24A and 26A together with the parterre and gardens of Sovetskaya Square are the listed remainder of the original scheme. Sovetskaya Square remains the centre of that design.
The town grew into the administrative centre of Leninsky District, close enough to the Moscow city limits that the capital's expansion has been the constant pressure on it. Both layers still stand. The Sukhanovo estate park and the monastery enclosure survive as green ground inside a district otherwise built over.

Where is Vidnoye?
Vidnoye lies against the southern limit of Moscow. The town is the administrative centre of Leninsky District, and the country around it still carries the estates and villages that preceded the streets, among them Sukhanovo, Tarychevo and Dydyldino. Green ground survives in places.
The Sukhanovo estate park, with its lime avenues, and the enclosure of the Svyato-Ekaterininsky Monastery are the two large open spaces the built-up area has not swallowed.
What is the climate of Vidnoye?
Nothing on this ground blunts the inland swing of the seasons. The lime avenues of the Sukhanovo estate park stand bare through the long cold half of the year, and the same park is the reason people come out from Moscow once the ground has thawed. Snow holds for months.
Indoor hours are easy to fill at the Svyato-Ekaterininsky Monastery, and the listed streets around Sovetskaya Square are walkable in any weather.
How do you get to Vidnoye?
The Moscow city limits are three kilometres off. That proximity makes Vidnoye one of the easiest places in Moscow Oblast to reach from the capital, and most arrivals come south out of Moscow rather than from anywhere else in Leninsky District. The estates lie further out.
Sukhanovo, Tarychevo, Tabolovo, Ermolino and Dydyldino are spread across the district, so reaching more than one of them in a day takes a car.
