What are the main landmarks in Djurgården?
Museums crowd the island. Skansen fills the high ground with an open-air museum, and its funicular, Skansens bergbana, saves the climb; the Baltic Sea Science Center sits inside the same grounds. Gröna Lund runs the amusement park along the shore.
Art has its own addresses: Liljevalchs konsthall for exhibitions, Biologiska museet for older display cases, and Djurgårdskyrkan and Seglora kyrka for two very different churches. The Vasa Museum and ABBA The Museum draw the crowds.
What is the history of Djurgården?
Royal ownership shaped the island. Since the fifteenth century the Swedish monarch has owned or held the right of disposition over Kungliga Djurgården, a right exercised by the Royal Djurgården Administration within the Royal Court of Sweden. In 1995 the island joined the Nationalstadsparken, the National City Park that covers much of it.
Djurgårdsstaden kept its houses among the museums.
