Balaklava holds the district's landmarks. Cembalo is the fortress above Balaklava, the oldest work the district lists, and the Храм Юпітера Доліхена (Балаклава) carries an older dedication still, to the Roman god Jupiter Dolichenus. The Naval museum complex Balaklava covers the twentieth century instead, a military site opened as a museum.

Balaklava is far older than 1921. That year gave the raion its outline, and Balaklava, already the settlement the district was named for, became the administrative centre it has held ever since. Its landmarks reach much further back, from the Roman dedication in the Храм Юпітера Доліхена (Балаклава) to Cembalo.
