The city splits between two counties. Jefferson County holds the end nearest Birmingham, and Shelby County the ground running away from it, which is the practical difference between a shopping-and-city trip and a golfing one.
Stonecroft and the Cahaba Museum and Conference Center anchor the quieter side. Joe Lee Griffin Stadium and A Hamilton Reid Chapel belong to the Samford University campus, close enough to matter when an event fills the rooms. Union Baptist Church over in Homewood and the St. George Melkite Greek Catholic Church are the other named stops inside the same short radius, and neither needs more than a few minutes of driving from anywhere in Hoover.
If you want the zoo and the museums, take a room on the Jefferson County side; if the trip is golf, the Shelby County end is closer to the Trail.
