Contemporary art defines the neighbourhood now. The Rubell Museum moved into a former food-distribution complex here, and the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse fills a nearby industrial shed, drawing collectors who once stayed within the murals of adjacent Wynwood and its Wynwood Walls. The New Covenant Presbyterian Church holds an older landmark.
Around them the wholesale produce trade still works the blocks along NW 17th Avenue, giving Allapattah a mix of gallery, warehouse and market that the Metrorail threads together.
What is the history of Allapattah?
The produce trade shaped Allapattah first. Sitting northwest of downtown Miami, the neighbourhood grew around wholesale markets and rail spurs that moved fruit and vegetables through the city, and its Seminole-rooted name, taken from a word for alligator, marks the low wet ground it was drained from. Art came much later.
The Rubell Museum and the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse converted old distribution buildings, while the New Covenant Presbyterian Church stood as one of the settled markers of the earlier neighbourhood.
