Plymouth Congregational Church anchors the district, its walls cut from native oolitic limestone and set in a garden off Main Highway. Nearby stand the grand estate houses. El Jardin was one of the mansions raised along the shore, and the modest Marjory Stoneman Douglas House recalls the writer who lived among the Grove's trees.

What is the history of Coconut Grove?
Bahamian labourers settled the Grove in the 1880s, raising shotgun-style homes along Charles Avenue and giving the neighbourhood its first Black community as estate money began arriving on the shore. Estate builders soon followed. The Trapp Homestead survives from those settler decades, and writers such as Marjory Stoneman Douglas were later drawn to the shaded streets.
It grew as its own village before Miami absorbed it.
