About Venetian Islands

Where to stay in Venetian Islands

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Pick your island. Venetian Islands strings six man-made islands across Biscayne Bay, and the two closest to the city, Biscayne Island and San Marco Island, sit inside Miami itself, while San Marino Island, Di Lido Island, Rivo Alto Island and Belle Isle carry the Venetian Causeway on toward Miami Beach. The causeway sets the rhythm.

Rooms near Belle Isle put you at the Miami Beach end, a short bridge from South Beach, while the Miami end keeps you closer to the mainland.

About Venetian Islands

What are the main landmarks in Venetian Islands?

One monument crowns the chain. On Flagler Monument Island, an uninhabited picnic islet in Biscayne Bay, the Flagler Memorial Monument was raised in 1920 to honour the railroad pioneer Henry Flagler, whose lines helped open this stretch of coast. The obelisk reads across the water.

Boaters anchoring off the Venetian Islands use it as a marker, a slim spike standing clear of Miami and Miami Beach on every side.

What is the history of Venetian Islands?

The islands were dredged, not born. Crews pumped sand from the floor of Biscayne Bay to raise the Venetian Islands during the land-boom years, and in 1925 a set of arch drawbridges replaced the older wooden crossing and took the name Venetian Causeway. The Flagler Memorial Monument came first.

Built in 1920 for Henry Flagler on its own islet, it stood in the bay while the neighbouring islands of San Marco Island and Rivo Alto Island were still taking shape as fill for Miami and Miami Beach.

Where is Venetian Islands?

Venetian Islands is a subtropical chain of six artificial islands set in Biscayne Bay, carrying the Venetian Causeway from Miami across to Miami Beach past the Flagler Memorial Monument.
