About Overtown

Where to stay in Overtown

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Overtown holds few hotels. It is a residential and historic neighborhood, so most visitors book beds across the line in downtown Miami and walk or ride the short distance north to reach its churches and rooming houses. Stay near the Greater Bethel AME Church for the district's civil-rights heritage, or base yourself close to the Dana A. Dorsey House to trace the story of the man who anchored Black Miami.

Overtown offers few places to sleep. The neighborhood rewards a daytime visit more than an overnight one.

About Overtown

What are the main landmarks in Overtown?

Overtown's landmarks tell its African-American story. The Greater Bethel AME Church has served the neighborhood's congregation for generations, one of the oldest Black churches in Miami. The Dana A. Dorsey House recalls the man who became Miami's first Black millionaire and a pillar of the district.

The Ward Rooming House sheltered Black travellers barred from segregated hotels elsewhere in the city, and it survives as a small museum and gallery for the neighborhood's memory. Nearby stands the Gesu Church. It marks the southern edge toward downtown Miami.

What is the history of Overtown?

Overtown was formed under Jim Crow laws. Those laws restricted where African-Americans could live in Miami, and the neighborhood grew just north of downtown as a self-contained Black community with its own churches, businesses, and lodgings. The Greater Bethel AME Church gathered the congregation, while the Dana A. Dorsey House marked the rise of Black enterprise and the Ward Rooming House gave travellers a bed when segregated hotels turned them away.

Churches came first. The district became the heart of Black Miami within Miami's Central District.
