What is the history of Kokomo?
The name comes from a Miami chief. Kokomo dates from 1855, and the innovations that followed came in tandem with the birth of the natural gas extraction industry in Howard County. Automobile manufacturing followed the gas.
The City of Firsts is the label the place took from that period, and the Elwood Haynes Museum is where that period is set out. Not all of the record is comfortable. The largest Ku Klux Klan gathering on record took place here in 1923, and the treatment of Ryan White, a teenager barred from school after contracting HIV through a transfusion, marked an early episode of the stigma that surrounded HIV and AIDS.
