Streets climbing away from the bay carry the older houses, the Lafayette-Durfee House, the Israel Picard House, the William Collins House, and the parish blocks around St. Anne's Church and Parish Complex, where the Portuguese-American side of the city is most legible. Central Congregational Church and Church of the Ascension mark the downtown blocks between the two. Quarry Street runs through that upper ground.
The Belmont Club and the Borden-Winslow House sit among the residential blocks, and beds there trade the water views for quiet and easier parking. Santo Christo Church anchors its own streets. St. Louis Church stands a little further out, and stays in that direction put the parish neighbourhoods rather than the museum ships at the door.

What is the history of Fall River?
Settlement dates from 1670. Cotton spinning turned a river mouth on Mount Hope Bay into the Spindle City, filling the slope with granite weaving sheds and the tenement rows that housed the people who worked them. Bristol County grew around that engine.
Portuguese-speaking families arrived in numbers large enough to build their own parishes, and Santo Christo Church still marks where that community put its money down. St. Louis Church and St. Patrick's Church went up for other congregations, and the Jesus Marie Convent belonged to the same wave of parish building. Older stock survives above the water.
The Lafayette-Durfee House and the Barnabus Blossom House stand from before the industrial century, while the Israel Picard House, the William Collins House and the Hathaway Brightman House belong to the streets that climb behind them. The Borden name is the one outsiders know. Lizzie Borden was accused of an axe murder, and the case still brings people who could not otherwise place Fall River on a map.
