What is the history of Livonia?
Livonia Township was organised in 1835. For more than a century it stayed a township on the outer edge of Wayne County, and the houses that survive from those years carry the names of the families who held the land. The Orson Everitt House, the Robert Yerkes House and the Henry Ford Square House date from that stretch.
The Phillip and Maria Hasselbach Dingledey House stands among them. Charters came late here. The name Livonia stayed through both forms of government.
The city was incorporated in 1950, and the change of status arrived with the outward push of Detroit, which filled the township's open ground with streets. Rosedale Gardens Historic District preserves a piece of that transition. Institutions followed.
Our Lady of Chaldeans Cathedral and Ward Evangelical Presbyterian Church belong to the city rather than the township, and the Detroit Race Course carried the name of the larger place next door.
