The Lemp Brewery anchors the north end. Its 27 buildings occupy a pie-shaped site bounded by Cherokee Street, Lemp Avenue and South Broadway, built above the lagering caves that drew German brewers to this stretch of bluff. Smaller markers sit in the grid itself, flounder houses under single shed roofs and brick storefronts with flats above them along South Broadway and Jefferson Avenue.
The Marine Villa Neighborhood Historic District covers ten blocks of them. Antique Row runs along the northern boundary.
What is the history of Marine Villa?
The St. Louis Commons once covered this ground. The grid went down in 1855, and the first tenants were small farms and brickyards whose owners raised frame and brick farmhouses in the 1860s, many of them flounder houses of one and a half stories under a shed roof. Lemp moved its brewing here that decade.
German workers followed the jobs at Lemp, Anheuser-Busch and the Cherokee Brewery. Then the streetcar arrived on South Broadway in 1890, and the blocks filled almost at once. The National Register took in the historic district in 2009.
