Mark Twain/I-70 Industrial was the arsenal end of wartime St. Louis. The U.S. Cartridge Company ran the city's largest war plant at Goodfellow Boulevard and Bircher Boulevard, turning out more than a billion rounds a year, and in September 1945 the Army took the buildings for a records centre holding the files of discharged soldiers.
The records work moved out in 1956. General Motors came earlier. A Fisher body and Chevrolet chassis plant opened on Union Boulevard in the 1920s, built DUKW amphibious trucks during the war, and assembled every Corvette made between 1954 and 1981.
